What causes back pain?

Back pain is one of the most common causes of disability in the world. Odds are that you or someone you know is currently dealing with back pain or has suffered from it at least some point in the near past.

There are several causations that could lead to back pain besides a disease or disorder. Some of them are:

  • Poor posture: Slouching in a chair puts a kink on your spine, try sitting up straight every time you sit down.

  • Lifting Heavy Objects: Bending over and picking up heavy objects using your back is never a good idea. Always try squatting and lifting with your legs.

  • Sleep position: Sometimes we don't realize how we sleep. If you sleep on your stomach or you are twisting your spine wrong while you sleep, it can put a strain on the back.

  • Using the wrong pillow: The neck and back are connected. If your pillow is not supporting your neck correctly, then it can also affect your back.

  • Sitting on hard surfaces: Sitting down on a hard wooden chair or concrete floor wrong can misalign the spine.

  • Poor foot wear: If you wear the wrong foot wear like high heels or sandals for too long, it can put a strain on the back and sometimes make the hip bones uneven. Again, all the bones in our bodies are connected.

Preventing and Treating Back Pain

Preventing back pain sounds fairly simple, don't do activities that would cause back pain right? Well, with our busy lives and tedious work schedules, sometimes we forget to take care of our bodies when we are more worried about taking care of others and the tasks of the day.

We tend to try and get tasks done in a hurry or we get tired and don't focus on things like proper posture.  With that being said, there are many ways to treat back pain, and the right treatment depends on the type of pain, its severity, and other factors.

Below are 4 ways to treat acute or less severe back pain:

1) Hot/cold packs: Apply a hot or cold pack to your back for 20-30 minutes at a time. You should alternate between hot and cold packs every 1-2 hours.

2) Pain medication: If your back pain is severe enough, your doctor may prescribe you some medication that can help relieve your symptoms. This includes muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory drugs, or opioid medications. However, keep in mind that this treatment option only masks the pain, you want to relieve the pain at its source.

3) Physical therapy: Physical therapy can help you strengthen your muscles in order to reduce the strain on them. It also helps with improving range of motion and flexibility in the spine.

4) Exercise: Exercise can help strengthen muscles and improve flexibility in the spine as well as reduce stress levels which may be contributing to your back pain.
